The new feature by the photo-sharing app lets users discover content and recommendations by their favorite public figures. The feature will primarily focus on mental health and wellness.
Announcing the same on Twitter, the Instagram official handle tweeted, "Starting today, you can check out Guides a new way to discover recommendations from people on Instagram. The first Guides focus on wellness and mental health content from respected organizations and creators." The Guides feature has been made available to only a handful of Instagram users including Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, Sudahdong NGO, Klicksafe, and Eenfance.
Although the feature is available on the latest version of the app on iOS and Android, the web users will not be able to see it yet.
"We know many people are struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we are first focusing Guides on wellness content. We'll enable creators to connect with expert organizations to share resources during this time, including tips on how to look after your well-being, maintaining a connection with others or managing anxiety or grief. To view a Guide, visit the profile of participating creators or organizations like @afspnational, @heads_together, @vitaalere, @klicksafe, @headspace_aus, @deepikapadukone, @sudahdong, and @eenfance. Then, tap the middle icon to view their Guides. In the coming days, you'll also be able to access Guides within the Explore tab," the Instagram blog read.
When you tap on a Guide, you will be able to see posts and videos by the creator, you are following. This would mainly involve useful tips on mental health, advice on something or information on coronavirus. However, If you want to delve deeper into a Guide post, you have to tap on the image or video to view the original Instagram post by the curator. Guides can also be shared to your Stories and you can also Direct Message it to someone from your friend list, just the way you do with other posts or pictures.
The Guide section would appear alongside the photo-grid section when you visit a profile. It is denoted by the symbol of an open book. However, you wouldn't find this section in the accounts of all the Instagram users, only the ones who have collaborated with Instagram for this will get the special Guides section.
