India reported 4,970 new cases of Covid-19 and 134 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the tally past the 100,000-mark, the Union health ministry said today. The rise comes on the second day of the fourth phase of the countrywide lockdown, which has seen more relaxations in the country with the Centre putting the onus on states to decide on curbs.
Consent of States No Longer Needed for Shramik Trains | In a fresh set of standard operating procedures for shramik trains for migrant labourers, the clause for consent of states has been done away with. In its fresh SOP for movement of stranded labourers, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the “movement of shramik trains shall be permitted by Ministry of Railways in consultation with Ministry of Home Affairs”. US Govt Set to Donate 200 Ventilators to India | The US government is planning to "donate" 200 ventilators to India with the first tranche of 50 expected to arrive soon as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, an American official said. Donald Trump had announced last week that the US will donate ventilators to India to treat the COVID-19 patients and help it fight the "invisible enemy".
Several Markets Open in Delhi after 2 Months | After being closed for nearly two months, several markets in Delhi opened following the "odd-even" formula while sanitising and trying to establish social distancing protocols. Markets like Connaught Place and Khan Market bore a deserted look in the first half of the day, but traders in markets like Tilak Nagar, Karol Bagh and Sarojini Nagar were seen cleaning their shops.
Around 56,000 Migrants Have Left Thane: Official | Nearly 55,960 migrant labourers have so far been sent to their native places from Maharashtra's Thane district amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown, Collector Rajesh Narvekar said. Of these, as many as 21,475 have been sent in 17 trains and 34,485 have been ferried in 1,553 buses to their native places in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Jharkhand, he said.
Intra-district Buses with 50% Capacity Allowed in Maharashtra | Sport complexes, stadia and other public open spaces to remain open for individual exercises in non-red zones; spectators and groups activities will not be allowed. Intra-district bus services with maximum 50% capacity will be allowed to operate, and bus will be allowed in non-red zones.
Hundreds of Migrants Gather at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai | Hundreds of migrant labourers gathered on an approach road to Bandra Terminus here before the departure of a Shramik Special train, leading to chaos in the area for some time. The crowd was later dispersed by police, a Western Railway official said.
UP Sends Bodies of Auraiya Victims With Migrants in Trucks | Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has expressed shock and concern over the visuals of injured migrant labourers travelling in an open truck with tarpaulin-wrapped dead bodies of Auraiya accident victims in Uttar Pradesh. The photos of the trucks went viral on social media, leading to outrage, after which the the bodies were loaded onto ambulances near Prayagraj.
Special Train Derails in Mangaluru | A 'Shramik' special train from Tirur (Kerala) to Jaipur (Rajasthan) route derailed at Padil, Mangaluru today. While no injuries were reported, the train resumed its journey after the derailed engine was replaced. However, track restoration work underway, reports ANI.

Singapore Reports 451 New Coronavirus Cases | Singapore continues to report a high level of coronavirus infection among foreign workers, confirming 451 new cases today, taking the total to 28,794. Of the new cases, only one is Singaporean citizen or a permanent resident while all others are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories, reports PTI.
UK Government Accused of Virus Testing Failures | An influential group of British lawmakers is accusing the government of failing to conduct enough tests for the new coronavirus, saying the lapse helped COVID-19 cut a deadly swath through the country's nursing homes. The House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee says that 'testing capacity has been inadequate for most of the pandemic so far,' reports the Associated Press.
Fresh Chance for Students to Apply for JEE-MAINS | Students whose plans to study abroad have been affected due to COVID-19 will get a fresh chance to apply for JEE-Mains, the entrance exam for engineering colleges, the HRD Minister announced today. "In view of representations received from various Indian students who were scheduled to join colleges abroad but are now keen to pursue their studies in India due to changed circumstances arising out of COVID-19, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to give an opportunity," HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said.

Six U'khand Districts in Orange Zone, Seven in Green | The Uttarakhand government has classified six of its 13 districts as orange zone and the rest in green besides deciding to implement the odd-even traffic formula for private vehicles in seven of its major cities. As per the guidelines issued by the state government late on Monday night, Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Pauri Garhwal, Almora, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar are in orange zone, while Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Champawat are in the green zone.

Four migrant workers were killed and 15 injured when a bus they were travelling in from Solapur to Jharkhand crashed into a truck in Maharashtra's Yavatmal early morning today. In another accident, three migrant labourers were killed and over 12 injured after a vehicle carrying them overturned on the Jhansi-Mirzapur highway last night. About 17 people were travelling in the vehicle and the injured have been admitted to hospital. The accidents are the latest in a series of similar tragedies involving migrant workers who have been walking miles to get home in face of the Covid-19 lockdown extension in the country.
The nationwide tally of Covid-19 cases crossed one lakh yesterday with more people testing positive for the virus in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and other states even as a much-relaxed fourth phase of the lockdown began with restarting of market complexes, autos, taxis and inter-state buses in various parts of the country. The death toll crossed the 3,000-mark.
With an aim to reboot numerous locked down economic activities, authorities across the country ordered reopening of markets, intra-state transport services and even of barber shops and salons in some states, barring in containment zones. However, schools, colleges, theatres, malls and religious gatherings are among those that would remain shut down, at least till May 31.
India has been under a lockdown since March 25, which was first supposed to be for 21 days or toll April 14, but was later extended till May 3, then further till May 17 and now for another two weeks till May 31.
However, a number of relaxations have been given in the current fourth phase, while states and union territories have also been granted significant flexibility for deciding the red, orange or green zones in terms of the quantum and severity of the virus spread.
