  • The AFL announced the 2020 season relaunch is scheduled for June 11
  • Players must follow strict guidelines to ensure there isn't a coronavirus outbreak
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

AFL players have been advised against casual hook-ups during the coronavirus pandemic as they prepare to return to the game.

The league has created a 'return to play' protocol for players ahead of the season relaunch on June 11.

Players are not allowed to welcome guests into their homes unless they are a partner, friend or a family member who is providing support for their wellbeing.

The AFL hopes they can stop a potential COVID-19 outbreak within the league by limiting gatherings and banning parties, The Herald Sun reported.

The guidelines say players can see 'a person they are in an intimate relationship with' but the rules aren't as clear for singletons.

While the AFL has not moved to ban one-night stands, the league has reportedly taken the stance that casual hook-ups are out of bounds.

Players who catch coronavirus after a casual hook-up may face penalties, the AFL has warned.

The expectations have not been officially documented but players have been privately advised to steer clear of any irresponsible sexual behaviour which could lead to a positive COVID-19 test result.

Players are required to limit their contact with members of the public to ensure the season doesn't face any other hiccups.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan announced the restart date on Friday and said every player will be tested for COVID-19 at least 24 hours before each session as well as twice a week.

'All players are undergoing education sessions on the protocols they will need to follow, including rigorous ongoing screening and regular testing throughout both the training and return-to-play period,' he said on Friday.

'This will also apply for umpires and key AFL match-day staff once the season resumes. Strict protocols will be in place to protect players, officials, staff, and the wider community.

'I want to say today is a significant step in getting footy back for everyone – our fans, our clubs, players, coaches, officials and staff.'

Players are banned from dining in cafes, bars or restaurants as part of the strict measures and they cannot 'let any social visitors' into their homes.
