This is the lowest result declared by the state board in past eight years. Over 1.6 lakh students appeared for the exams. Gujarat is the first state to declare the board exam results in the country.
However, even the 71.34% pass result was possible after the board gave a rather liberal 14 grace marks. Maximum grace marks were given in physics and chemistry, sources said. “Nearly 14,500 students have benefited from grace marks, pushing pass percentage up by 16%,” a senior board official said. Pass percentage in physics is 72.41% while 72.38% students cleared the exam.
The 76.62% result of A group (mathematics, physics and chemistry) is 2.3% less as compared to 2019 leading to nearly 5,000 fewer students qualifying for admissions in engineering colleges. This result has engineering college managements worried, which stare at a high number of seats going vacant. Officials in the admission committee said if eligibility criteria was not lowered to 40%, over 70% of the 72,800-odd seats would fall vacant.
