A troubled AFL star who was admitted to hospital with stab wounds to his chest refused to tell police how the injury occurred.

Jack Steven remains at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne after he was admitted on Saturday night with minor injuries.

The 30-year-old midfielder was intoxicated at the time, according to the Herald Sun, and turned down multiple opportunities to explain what happened to police.

Hospital staff first raised the matter with police, who are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Steven's new club, the Geelong Cats, have pledged unwavering support to the father-of-one.

'The club is aware that Jack Steven was injured in an incident last night,' a statement reads.

'Jack is in hospital and recovering. The club's concern is for Jack's health and well being.

'The matter has been referred to police and until their investigations are completed the club will not be in position to offer further comment.'

His new teammates have also spoken of how well Steven appeared to be doing in the lead up to the incident.

Former Cats captain Cameron Ling told ABC radio he was shattered to hear of the incident.

'He has battled mental health issues and worked through those and loved being at the beach and close to the coastal lifestyle,' Ling said.

'All reports from the club were he was training hard through the summer until the season stopped because of coronavirus.'

Ling insisted Steven was looking ahead to the future and 'excited about what the season held for him'.

'We don't know many details other than that footy is the furthest thing from his mind and his family's mind. All it is will be his health and wellbeing and recovering from this.'

'At his best he is a wonderful footballer and he came to the Cats looking for a change of scenery to reinvigorate his love of the game.'

Steven is expected to make a full recovery and will be match fit to return to the field when the season resumes following a break during the COVID-19 lockdown.

A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed to Daily Mail Australia a 30-year-old Lorne man was taken to a Melbourne hospital overnight.

'Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a 30-year-old Lorne man presented at a Melbourne hospital overnight with a non-life-threatening injury,' they said in a statement.

'Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and hope to speak to the victim again later today.'

Steven moved to the Cats from St Kilda for the 2020 season to be closer to his family after experiencing mental health issues in 2019.

The four-time St Kilda best-and-fairest award winner managed just seven matches last year in his fight with depression and revealed he thought of retiring from the game at his lowest.

'I love playing, I still wanted to play,' he told AFL.com.au. 'I don't think my footy dies down that quickly, it's just my fitness and getting to happy, healthy state.

'It [having a break] had to happen. Everyone reacts differently to mental health. Some people can deal with it better than others and I just needed to take a break. It was the right thing to do.'

Steven thanked the Saints for their work with him throughout his career and expressed excitement for the chapter ahead.

'I owe a lot to them,' he said. 'I'm really thankful and I still love the club, but super-stoked to be down here.'
