GUWAHATI: Assam’s
Covid-19 tally touched 100 on Sunday as nine cases were reported from five districts in last 12 hours. With positive results coming out of labs daily since May 13 without a break, the five days saw an addition of 36 new cases.
"We have a first positive case from north Assam region. The person has travelled from
West Bengal and hails from Biswanath district," state health minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Except one, who is linked to
Changsari potato godown contact, the other five have travel history and have entered the state recently after the travel restrictions were lifted on May 4.
One positive case in Cachar has come from Chennai by train while two positive persons in Jorhat have come from Delhi by private vehicle. All of them were taken to quarantine centres immediately on their arrival at the zonal centres. Sarma said among the three who tested positive in Guwahati on Sunday evening, two have come from Mumbai while one arrived from Bihar.
The 60-year-old positive person of Biswanath district, who has come was working in a hotel in Howrah is the only one who was not in quarantine centre because he had managed to hoodwink officials at the entry check point on the Assam-West Bengal inter-state border at Srirampur and reached his home at
Pakhriguri village.
It was the alert villager and his family members who isolated him immediately by setting up a makeshift tarpaulin tent at a corner of the man’s land and informed the district authorities, who took his swab and have taken him to hospital after testing positive. His family members have also been taken to institutional quarantine centre and will be tested for Covid.
With the fresh additions, the active cases has also climbed to 55. Two persons have died and another two have migrated to other states while number of recovered persons is 41.
As the numbers keep growing, Sarma in a tweet cautioned, "In view of developing situation, I urge elderly (65+) & children below 10 to strictly stay inside, unless very important."
The state government is sending every citizens of the state returning from other states to quarantine centers and testing their swab samples, which has effectively kept the virus from going into uncontrolled community transmission.
