Motorola announced its comeback to the premium smartphone space last month with the Edge+ flagship phone in the US. The Edge+ is a proper flagship phone with the latest specifications that make it rival the likes of OnePlus 8 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10 and Samsung Galaxy S20. Motorola said that the phone will come to India and now it has a launch date. Flipkart has posted a teaser for the Edge+, announcing its arrival on May 19.
Of course, the teaser hasn't given out the price of the Edge+ (you will have to wait for the launch event to know that.) The event is most likely to be held online due to the COVID-19 lockdown and it will be streaming from 12 pm. Given that it is an expensive phone, Motorola is likely to bundle it with a couple of introductory offer similar to the Razr. That said, you can be assured that it won't be as expensive as the Razr.
The Edge+ is what Motorola claims is its boldest and loudest flagship phone. Filter out the aspirational words assigned by its marketing team and Motorola simply wants you to focus on the wildly curved edges of the display. The Edge+ has is display curving at the edges all the way to either side. The display itself measures 6.7-inches and uses an OLED panel with a resolution of Full HD+.
Similar to all flagship phones this year, the Edge+ uses a Snapdragon 865 chip and that means it also comes with support for 5G networks. Motorola has only opted for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage for the US model but India could get models with slightly lesser RAM and storage to keep the prices down.
The Edge+ also relies on a near-stock version of Android 10, similar to what you see on the Moto G phones. However, Motorola lets its users customise the user interface similar to how OnePlus does. Hence, users will be able to change icons, accent colours and even customise the edges of the display to act as shortcuts.
The Edge+ is going high on cameras too. The main rear camera has a 108-megapixel camera that's accompanied by a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom. Motorola has given the phone a 5000mAh battery to keep it running without charging too much. There's 18W fast wired charging and 15W fast wireless charging, along with 5W reverse wireless charging.
Given the specifications, the Motorola Edge+ could closely compete with the Xiaomi Mi 10 5G, OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 5G. That means we can expect its pricing to be upwards of Rs 50,000. Will it be a better choice or just another addition to the premium smartphone space? This is a question we can only answer once we have the phone for review.
