County Court Judge Michael Tinney slammed Zampatti's disgusting behaviour saying that he 'totally abused that trust' with his student, the Herald Sun reported.

'This was plainly serious criminal conduct,' Judge Tinney said.

'She was 17 years of age and your pupil. This was not an affair. This was not an equal relationship.

'I have absolutely no doubt at all I must send you to prison.'

Zampatti's lawyers requested their client not be jailed and be placed on a Community Correction Order instead.

Judge Tinney sentenced Zampatti to two years and three months jail, but set a non-parole period of 14 months.

The court heard how the affair was discovered after the man's wife, a fellow teacher at Christian College Geelong, grew suspicious and notified the school principal who fired the teacher and revoked his registration.

Prosecutor Joanne Piggot told the court the affair involved Zampatti phoning or texting the girl an 'extremely' high amount and regular touching and kissing often on school grounds.

Ms Piggot told the court Mr Zampatti organised a weekend trip to a five-star Melbourne hotel where the pair dined in Chinatown, showered together, and slept in the same bed.

She added there was a high degree of deception and planning involved.

Zampatti acknowledged his behaviour with the student was wrong and encouraged her to keep it a secret, he also told her to delete his messages after his wife began asking questions.

The victim made a report to police in 2019 prompting the criminal charges.
