Yavatmal: Left with no food and even water, the residents of containment zones of Indira Nagar, Pawarpura, Hindu Moksha Dham locality and Patipura areas of the city were forced to come out on the streets demanding supply of essentials.
Following detection of positive patients, authorities have declared these areas as containment zones banning movement of people. The supply of food and essentials, ensured by some NGOs and ward members, has dwindled as they have exhausted their resources.
The situation has worsened so much that many from the locality have to literally beg for food to feed their family members.
One Manda Raju Moogle, mother of three children, has to take care of her disabled husband too. A resident of ward No. 9, Manda was forced to come out on the streets begging for food to feed her children and husband.
“Not a single grain is left in the hut and there is no money to buy it,” Manda told TOI. “Grocery kits were distributed to a select few. We did not get any,” she said.
Manda is not alone. Several other women can be seen moving door-to-door with begging bowls for grains or flour.
Moreover, on suspicion of spread of the Covid at the community handpumps, the authorities have closed 12 handpumps leaving the area without water.
Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran was ordered to supply water to the area, which it did. But for the last 2-3 days, there is no supply of even drinking water which has forced the residents to come to the streets, said municipal council member Javed Ansari on Thursday.
Ansari held a press conference to bring the plight of the residents to the notice of the authorities.
Earlier also, womenfolk from the area had been forced to come out demanding supply of milk and water, which was ensured by the administration.
On the other hand, Shiv Sena claims to have distributed 1,24,530 food packets in the area, while BJP claims to have distributed 77,078. Several NGOs too claim to have supplied essentials in the areas. Despite such tall claims, scenes of people with begging bowls paint a different picture.
