The coronavirus pandemic continues to trouble the country despite efforts from the central and state governments to stop its spread. The third phase of the nationwide lockdown with "considerable relaxations" is currently in place till May 17. However, governments are also keeping in place necessary curbs so as to not lose all the gains that have been achieved in the battle against the virus.
The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in India has crossed the 78-000 mark, while the death toll is approaching the 2,600-mark. However, the recovery rate from the virus was reported to be around 33.63% till Wednesday, which is a significant development over last week's 26.59%.
Maharashtra continues to be the epicentre of the coronavirus spread where the number of cases witnessed the largest spike in a day on Wednesday. Recording the highest single-day count of 1,495 new COVID-19 cases, the tally in Maharashtra reached 25,922 on Wednesday, the official data released by the state's health department showed. The state also reported 54 deaths, including 40 in worst-hit Mumbai, taking the death toll to 975.
Dharavi in Mumbai, Asia's largest slum, has recorded over 1,000 cases after 66 new cases on Wednesday, The COVID-19 tally in Dharavi stands at 1028 while the death toll in the area is 40.
The Delhi Metro has also started preparations for the resumption of train services and protocol for social distancing is being worked upon although the date of opening is not been finalised, the DMRC said on Wednesday.
