New Delhi:

Migrants will be given free food grain supply for the next two months, the government announced today, in the second tranche of announcements on the mega economic package to tide over the coronavirus crisis.

A one nation, one ration card system will also be introduced, which will benefit 67 crore beneficiaries in 23 states by August 2020.

The move will help eight crore migrants, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Migrants who do not have state beneficiary cards where they are, will get five kg of wheat and rice each, and a kg of chana per family per month.

Rs 3,500 crore for this would be borne by the government, said Ms Sitharaman.

The government has also announced a scheme for affordable rental housing complexes for migrants.

In this, existing government-funded housing can also be included on a public-private partnership basis, the Finance Minister said.

This is the second straight briefing by Ms Sitharaman to share details of the Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support various sections hit by coronavirus and its economic fallout, especially because of weeks of lockdown.
