Image used for representational purpose onlyMUMBAI: A 45-year-old police constable attached to Shivaji Nagar police station succumbed to coronavirus infection on Thursday.
With this, the number of policemen who died due to Covid-19 rose to six in Mumbai and nine in the state.
According to the state police’s statistics, total 1,001 cops have tested positive for the infection out of which 142 have fully recovered and have been discharged.
The deceased constable's wife too has tested positive for the infection and is quarantined, said a police official.
He is the youngest policemen to have died due to Covid-19.
The cop who was attached to the Shivaji Nagar police station, had complained of fever and initially, he took general medicines but when he showed coronavirus-related symptoms, he was admitted to a hospital in Panvel.
"His swab sample was collected and the report came positive for Covid-19. When his condition didn't improve, he was shifted to government-run MGM Hospital in Kalamboli on May 8 where he was kept on ventilator support. His condition worsened and he passed away on Thursday," said an official.
He said that the constable may have contracted the virus while he was on patrolling duty in Shivaji Nagar which is is a major containment zone after Dharavi slum.
On Sunday, 53-year-old assistant sub-inspector died due to Covid-19 infection.
Last week, head constable from Vinobha Bhave Nagar in Kurla had succumbed to the disease.
Last month, three policemen from the city fell prey to the virus.
