Fugitive Ricardo Barbaro is in police custody following his arrest in the western suburbs of Sydney.

The 33-year-old had been on the run from police since the discovery of Ellie Price's body in her South Melbourne apartment on May 4.

Homicide squad boss Detective Inspector Tim Day said an extradition hearing would be sought to bring the man back to Victoria for questioning over the mother's death.

"Homicide and fugitive taskforce officers and other law enforcement partners located Barbaro at approximately 1am this morning in western Sydney," he said.

"Barbaro will front a Sydney court in coming days in relation to an extradition to Victoria.

"I want to say thank you to the Victorian and national public for all the assistance they've provided."
