PATIALA: A middle-aged COVID-19 suspect who jumped quarantine period a day before its completion died under mysterious circumstances at a village of Nabha in Patiala district of
Punjab, on Thursday. The deceased was identified as a resident of Hiyana Kalan village in Nabha and was quarantined in village government school since May 1.
The health authorities claimed they have not taken any COVID-19 samples of the suspect as it seems a probable case of fits as a reason behind the death. The doctors also claimed that the 45-year-old deceased man was also addicted to liquor and was getting treatment from the government de-addiction centre from past some time. The officials revealed that the man used to operate combine and reaper and was quarantined since his return from Sangrur district.
Senior medical officer, Nabha rural, Dr Hans Raj said, “The deceased was getting treatment of de-addiction and even during his quarantine period he was provided with the medicines for de-addiction. After 13 days of quarantine, he managed to escape from the quarantine centre and died the next day.”
Civil Surgeon Dr Harish Malhotra said that no COVID-19 samples were required to be taken as the deceased had died of fits probably. He said that the deceased jumped quarantine on the second last day after he faced fits in the centre and thereafter he again allegedly faced fits. He said that earlier there were reports that the deceased had consumed sanitizer at the quarantine centre but we could not find any evidence in this regard. Dr Malhotra added that the deceased was also asymptomatic for all his 13 days of quarantine.
DSP Nabha, VS Thind, said, “The post-mortem of the deceased has been conducted but the reports are awaited. He was quarantined since his return from Sangrur district. We have no information about sanitizer consumption by the deceased in the quarantine centre however the investigation is underway and action will be taken as per law against anyone found guilty."
