Representative imageCHANDIGARH: The UT Chandigarh's education department in on Thursday extended summer vacations in government and government-aided schools till further orders. An official order in this regard was issued by district education officer Alka Mehta. The department had earlier announced early summer vacations from April 15 till May 14, on April 13.
Thursday was the last day of the vacations and the order was much awaited. A sense of relief was seen among the school heads and the teachers after the announcement. With the number of coronavirus cases rising in UT Chandigarh, teachers as well as parents of the Tricity were in favour of the extension and had been wishing for the same.
This as the school teachers feel that the government schools are not well equipped to open with social distancing. Teacher unions had also written to the education department requesting for an extension of vacations.
A teacher, requesting anonymity, shared, “First and foremost is strength of students in government schools, which is high and the way the virus is spreading it is difficult to ensure the safety of children and teachers.”
There are 1,000 to 2,000 students studying in most government schools of UT Chandigarh.
