2 MC employees suspended for taking money from migrants

Ludhiana: A day after protesting migrants alleged that they were being made to pay for their transit to railway station, municipal corporation commissioner K P Brar suspended two employees — a clerk and a peon — with immediate effect on Wednesday. Brar said the employees have confessed to taking money from migrant workers.
While Jaspal worked as a clerk at Zone C property tax branch, Sukhpreet Singh was posted as a peon at first appellate authority office.
To transport migrants from their respective localities to railway station, teams were formed in which one employee each from civic body, health department and police was deployed.
The teams were tasked to register migrants and then take them to railway station. On Wednesday, migrants alleged that they were not getting ration and were told to give money to return to their hometowns.
Brar said, “I issued suspension orders of the employees after receiving a video in which they were seen taking money. Besides, they have admitted that they took Rs200 each from a few labourers. The department is working day and night to help migrants reach home. Such a behaviour is not acceptable.”
Strict action would be taken against MC employees indulging in corrupt practices, she added.
