Airtel set to launch online concerts on Wynk Music; begins pilots
- Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has started pilots for hosting live online concerts on its Wynk Music app, according to a source.
- The move is aimed at expanding the adoption of streaming platforms and comes at a time when the coronavirus pandemic triggered movement restrictions, and social distancing norms are prompting performing artists to explore live steaming and virtual concerts.
To check feasibility of resuming sanitiser export, Centre asks states about production capacity
- To examine the feasibility of resuming export of alcohol-based hand sanitiser amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the central drugs controller has asked states and union territories to submit by Friday noon details of manufacturers, their production capacity and if they fulfil domestic demand.
- The government had on May 6 banned exports of alcohol-based hand sanitiser to ensure its availability in the domestic market as the novel coronavirus cases soared in the country.
Fiscal deficit to balloon to 7.9% in FY21: Report
- The report had earlier estimated the fiscal deficit to be 3.5 per cent of GDP this fiscal.
- The government has announced a cumulative package of Rs 20 lakh crore, which is nearly 10 per cent of GDP to provide relief to various segments of the coronavirus-hit economy.
- "After taking into account cash outflow of these measures as well as the previous and the recent excise duty hike and DA freeze (amounting to around 0.8 per cent of GDP), we now revise our baseline fiscal deficit (excluding extra budgetary resources (EBR)) to 7.9 per cent of the revised GDP in FY21 from 3.5 per cent earlier, owing to lower revenues and higher expenditure against the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic," the SBI's research report Ecowrap. said.

Coronavirus vaccine could be ready in a year: EU agency
- A vaccine for the coronavirus could be ready in a year's time under an "optimistic" scenario, based on data from trials that are under way, the European Medicines Agency said Thursday.
- "We can see the possibility if everything goes as planned that some of them (vaccines) could be ready for approval in a year from now," Marco Cavaleri, the EMA's head of biological health threats and vaccines strategy, told a video news conference.

England approves new COVID-19 antibody test
- A new antibody test to establish whether someone has been infected with coronavirus in the past has been approved by health officials in England, it emerged on Thursday.
- Public Health England (PHE) said the antibody test, developed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche, was a "very positive development".
- It involves a blood test that looks for antibodies to see if a person has already had the virus and might now have some immunity.
Pakistan reports 1,452 new infections, 33 deaths
- Pakistan's total number of coronavirus cases reached 35,788 after 1,452 new infections were reported, while the death toll rose to 770 with 33 fresh fatalities, the health ministry said on Thursday, as the spread of the deadly disease through local transmission showed a dangerous upward trajectory.
- According to the Ministry of National Health Services, Punjab province reported 13,561 cases, Sindh 13,341, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 5,252, Balochistan 2,239, Islamabad 822, Gilgit-Baltistan 482 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 91 cases.
Scientists create washable coating for PPEs that repels viruses
- Researchers have created a textile coating that can prevent viruses from adhering to the surface of masks, gowns, and other personal protective equipment (PPE), an advance that may lead to better protection of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- According to the scientists, including those from the University of Pittsburgh in the US, textiles and materials used in PPEs can absorb and carry viruses and bacteria, inadvertently spreading disease the wearer sought to contain.
- They said the coating, described in the journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, provides better protection while allowing for safe reuse of PPEs, which are already in short supply amid the coronavirus pandemic.

- Top UN economic experts have hailed as “impressive” the Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package, the largest so far among developing countries, announced by India to revive the country's economy, which has been severely hit by the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced massive new financial incentives on top of the previously announced packages for a combined stimulus of Rs 20 lakh crore (USD 260 billion).

Pandemic will cost global insurers $203 bn: Lloyd's
- The deadly coronavirus pandemic will cost the global insurance industry about $203 billion, the Lloyd's of London market forecast on Thursday. Lloyd's itself expects to pay out up to $4.3 billion on coronavirus claims, putting the global health crisis on a par with the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, it added in a statement.

- India's technology ministry said on Thursday it had rolled out a version of its Bluetooth contact-tracking app for 5 million JioPhones, the cheap internet-enabled devices sold by Reliance Industries' telecoms unit.
- India was set to roll out a version of its coronavirus contact-tracing application Aarogya Setu for JioPhones within days, as it looks to increase the reach of the system, Reuters reported last week.

Japan OKs end to some state of emergency rules
- Experts on the Japanese coronavirus task force approved a government plan Thursday lifting an ongoing state of emergency ahead of schedule in most areas, except for Tokyo and several other high-risk areas.
- Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, after attending the task force meeting, said the experts approved a plan to lift the state of emergency in 39 of the country's 47 prefectures, while keeping the measure in place for eight others, including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido, where risks still remain high.
