The Tulinj police have arrested the driver. Liquor worth Rs 3.26 lakh has been seized from the Maruti van that operated as an ambulance. The driver told police that the booze was to be delivered to a person in Mumbai.
Liquor shops had opened in the district, Mumbai and neighbouring areas for a day but had to be shut due to overcrowding.
Home delivery of booze is likely to start in the state from May 15. Mumbai has not been included in it yet.
Illegal transporters of liquor were also caught in Vasai. A car was intercepted during a nakabandi at Panchvati in Vasai. Alcohol worth Rs 4.31 lakh was found.
A two-wheeler rider in Vasai was also held carrying booze worth Rs 33,000. He said that while he had procured it illegally, it was for personal consumption.
The Vasai-Virar region, especially Nalasopara is a hotspot for Covid-19. Health workers have been worried about the lack of adequate ambulances for coronavirus patients.
