Iconic art pieces, vintage brass sculptures and glass chandeliers—Amitabh Bachchan's family home in Mumbai is full of striking design elements. Take a virtual tour of the residence now
The Bachchan family is considered to be the first family of Bollywood. And whether you follow these details or not, you probably already know that the family resides in Juhu, a suburban neighbourhood in Mumbai. Amitabh Bachchan lives with wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek Bachchan, daughter in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and granddaughter Aaradhya Bachchan at Jalsa, and the star's daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda, along with children Navya Naveli Nanda and Agastya Nanda are often seen spending quality time here too. Jalsa, which translates to ‘celebration’, is a beautifully made two-storey bungalow that was gifted to Amitabh Bachchan by director Ramesh Sippy after the duo worked together in the film Satte Pe Satta in 1982. If you’ve ever wondered what the interiors of this iconic celebrity home look like, the wait is over. Over the years, the Bachchans have given us many glimpses into their mansion via Instagram. Ahead, we take you through the superstar's home.
If you've ever visited the neighbourhood of Juhu, it's not uncommon to see a taxi or two stop opposite Amitabh Bachchan's home, allowing tourists to take a few pictures of the actor's much-talked-about home. Now considered as an iconic landmark in the city, Jalsa can be recognised by its towering, dark wooden double doors, which open up to a magnificent property.
Take a peek inside the gates and you'll spot palm trees and shrubs on both sides of the driveway, followed by the main entrance to the house on the left. These gates open every Sunday evening for fans and photographers to catch a glimpse of Bachchan. This tradition began in 1982 after the actor suffered an accident during the shoot of his film Coolie. After Bachchan recovered, he decided to come out and thank his well wishers, who had prayed tirelessly for his recovery.
The Bachchans living room brings together traditional high arches and an expansive art collection to create a regal space with an old-world charm. The interiors include elements such as ornately detailed baroque pieces, vintage brass sculptures, and vintage glass chandeliers. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open up to Jalsa's garden and bring in natural light during the day, plush couches in terracotta hue, rich gold curtains, glossy marble floors accessorised with Turkish carpets complete the room.
Another interesting element in Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's living room is the accent wall, a deep pistachio green corner which is home to a large oil painting of lotuses and birds, against which the family loves taking photographs. The Bachchans are also proud owners of multiple silverware pieces that you will spot displayed throughout their home. Candle stands, animal figurines and vases feature reflective surfaces and metallic accents. Another unmissable piece of art in this part of Jalsa is the Bachchans fold-out Tanjore painting, a regal South Indian-style treasure housed in thick black frames and decorated with gold lotuses, which adds a traditional touch to their abode.
Inspired by Mughal and Persian architecture, the Bachchan family's intimate living room features an accent wall in the same shade of green as the formal living room, but what gives it a distinct look is the interesting light wooden panelling along its walls, which comes together to create a dome-like structure. Illuminated with rows and rows of warm yellow lights, this space also includes plush lime green couches topped off with neon cushions that give it a slightly more casual feel. Contemporary paintings and large family photographs mount the lattice-like wood work in the background.
Unlike most of Jalsa, Amitabh Bachchan's work area takes on a sleeker, more modern aesthetic. Soothing shades of cream and light brown control the palette of this room. A plush olive green leather couch and arm chair, along with a black coffee table, instantly grab attention. What Bachchan's study does have in common with the rest of his home is a great collection of paintings and portraits. It's safe to say that this family loves collecting artworks.
In one corner of the room sits a vintage trunk with tan leather accents that has been converted into a cabinet, along with indoor plants that help bring a touch of the outdoors in. Another part of Bachchan's workspace features floor-to-ceiling wood panelled walls with a custom-made standing desk and a bookshelf. Bachchan once revealed that this table was added to his home because of a lesson he learnt from his late father and poet, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. “When you tire at work sitting at a desk you stand and work .. got a special table made for that.. lessons learnt from my Father.. who worked thus..never forget lessons learnt from Ma and Babuji.”
Right outside Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's dining and formal living room sits their large backyard. Filled with leafy shrubs, succulents, trees and tropical plants, this spot makes for a great playground for Aaradhya, and was recently used for a DIY grad afternoon for Shweta Bachchan Nanda's daughter, Navya Naveli Nanda. The other side of the yard features a verandah with grey flooring, the perfect spot for the family to enjoy an afternoon cup of tea on a rainy day.
