- Consumer advocacy group CHOICE has assessed the best chicken soup options
- The most amount of real chicken you'll find in any protein soup is 11 per cent
- The group classified those that are Australian-made, low in salt and low in MSG
Australia's top consumer watchdog has found that almost all supermarket chicken soups have less than 10 per cent meat, while an alarming number have none at all and are only flavoured like the poultry.
CHOICE Australia has analysed 53 of the most common supermarket chicken soups to see which contained the highest percentages of protein, vegetables and noodles - and those that are the best value for money.
It narrowed down the 53 to 12 soups considered the best value, which includes five Campbell's soups and three by Heinz.
Chicken noodle and chicken and corn were the most popular soups, and Coles chicken soups were the cheapest price-per pack.

CHOICE Australia pointed out in their findings that nine of the soup varieties don't contain any chook at all, while the highest level of chicken included was just 11 per cent
The cheapest per serve was Coles Chicken Noodle Flavoured Soup Mix, which works out to be 11 cents, and the most expensive was Australian Organic Food Co 100% Australian Organic Chicken, Spelt & Vegetable Soup, which costs $4.50 for a single serve pouch.
For the health conscious, the lowest salt index was found in Continental Chicken Noodle Simmer Soup Salt Reduced, which has a sodium content of less than 120mg per 100ml.
Only two soups were found to exceed 10 per cent chicken content, with the Australian Organic Food Co and Heinz Classic Country Chicken products reaching 11 per cent, while nine out of the 53 soups didn't contain any chicken at all.

Five different Coles chicken soups were among the meat-free products that some may consider a rip-off, but for vegetarians it allows them to enjoy a chicken flavour.
The soup containing the most corn, extra vegetables and noodles was Aldi The Soup Co Chicken & Sweetcorn Soup, which is made up of 35 per cent corn, and Continental Chicken Noodle Simmer Soup Salt Reduced was made up of 77 per cent noodles.
The Australian Organic Food Co won again in the origin department with 100 per cent of its produce coming from regions Down Under.

The Australian public commented on the findings by saying they weren't surprised there was such a small amount of chicken added, and they prefer to make their own for this reason.
'Just made a pot of chicken and vegetable soup. Definitely loads of chicken in mine,' one woman said.
'If you read the cans closely most will say chicken flavoured,' said another.
A third added: 'It's so simple to make - I never buy chicken soup'.
