Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal (File Photo)GUWAHATI: Two youths from Assam, who were stranded near New Delhi Railway Station with no money and empty stomachs, have finally been rescued by the state government officials posted in the national capital.
Santosh Borah (19) of Lakhimpur walked from Amritsar with two companions, who died on way probably because of hunger. He was looted of his last remaining savings of Rs 2,000 on the way and somehow managed to reach New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday hoping to meet someone who could help him. He had only his mask and key chain as his possessions.
Santosh was working in factory and at a farm as part time worker in Amritsar and when the lockdown started, his employer asked him to leave.
On the other hand, 24-year-old Raja Doley from Maderguri village in Lakhimpur district, was working in Delhi as a wage earner and because of lockdown, he also got stranded there with no money to come to his native place.
“In view of the plight of two youths from Assam, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the principal resident commissioner, New Delhi to rescue them and provide them refuge in Assam Bhawan,” the chief minister’s office said.
Sonowal asked principal resident commissioner Kailash Samria to press his team into action and reach out to the two youths and rescue them and a team of Assam Bhawan reached out to the stranded youths, rescued them and took them to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for check-up as well as to ascertain their Covid-19 status.
“Both the youths have been accommodated in Assam House and they will be there till their Covid-19 report comes in. Depending on their status, steps will be taken to send them to their respective destinations,” the CM’s office added.
