NHRC notice to Maharashtra over 'wrong interpretation' of SC order on releasing prisoners
The policy allegedly adopted by the Maharashtra government to decongest jails has arisen due to "misinterpretation of directions" given by the Supreme Court in the matter, the rights panel said. It said, allegedly, of the random tests conducted on 144 prisoners in the Arthur Road Jail, 103 were found positive, including 26 members of the staff. The complainant has requested for the intervention of the commission to ensure the well-being of prisoners.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in South-East Asia, the WHO on Friday cautioned countries in the region to take "evidence-informed action" and conduct careful assessment of the local epidemiology before winding down the health and social measures taken to combat the virus. A WHO official said the focus should be on the local epidemiology of COVID-19, to identify hot-spots and clusters, and the capacity of systems and responders to find, isolate and care for cases, and quarantine contacts. "Countries in the region must continue to take evidence-informed action and conduct careful risk assessments while winding back public health and social measures," the WHO regional director said.

World Bank to provide $1 billion loans for social protection
World Bank on Friday said it had cleared a $1 billion assistance for social protection and is in talks with the government for funding initiatives to assist micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). World Bank country director Junaid Ahmad did not elaborate on the size of the loans for MSMEs, saying they were being negotiated. He, however, complimented the government’s approach, focusing on healthcare, social protection and economic stabilization.
