A Coles store has been accused of sexism by some disgruntled shoppers after one customer noticed laundry detergent and sanitary pads in the Mother's Day gift section. 

The shopper snapped a picture of the shelves, which were stocked with slippers, fleece rugs and keep cups, on Monday.

In a post on Facebook, she complained the discounted Cold Power laundry powder had been included in the section, which was designated for annual Mother's Day celebrations. 

'Washing power. In the Mother's Day section,' the woman wrote.

'Are you f***ing kidding me Coles?'

One viewer observed Libra and U by Kotex sanitary pads had also been stocked on the shelf.

'And pads like ye mum wants some pads for Mothers Day,' the viewer wrote.

Another viewer wrote: 'Bet it's not there for Fathers Day.'

Some Facebook users managed to crack a joke about the sight.

'That's so that when mum is at the shops buying her own Mother's Day pressie she can grab the essentials while she does it,' one wrote.

It's understood the picture was taken the day after Mother's Day. 

Coles are known to quickly change their displays after the conclusion of an event like Easter or Christmas.

A Coles spokeswoman said the supermarket celebrates all mums, grandmas, aunties, stepmothers on Mother's Day.

'Our annual range of Mother's Day gifts, which include treats like slippers, mugs and chocolates, are popular with our customers and are usually displayed in a special section of our store, often alongside other promotions,' the spokeswoman said.

'It was not our intention to offend customers with the placement of these products and we'll ensure we review the layout in our stores in future.'
