5 spine-tingling horror shows you can stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video now

Turn the lights down and the volume up—you don't want to miss these supernatural-themed shows

We select our entertainment based on how we want to be affected by it, so people wanting to watch ghosts, ghouls and demons (among other entities) must be crazy, or so one would think. However, researchers believe that those who love watching content that spooks them out, supernaturally or by gore, tend to be better at managing stressful situations in everyday life. So, if you're ready to venture out from the sea of romance and drama (and those highly predictable procedural cop shows), here's a list of horror shows you could explore.

Penny Dreadful

The elegantly gothic series set in the Victorian era will have you on the edge of your seat as the stunning Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green) battles demons that threaten her very soul. With strong literary influences, Penny Dreadful will transport you into a dark world, and who knows, maybe leave you craving for some more.

The Haunting of Hill House

Be ready to lose a few nights' sleep after you begin watching The Haunting of Hill House, loosely based on the 1959 book by Shirley Jackson. With the past imposing on the future, the Crain family must keep their differences aside to save themselves by finding out what lies in the Red Room. With The Haunting of Bly Manor, a sequel to the series soon making its way to our screens, now would be a good time to binge-watch the show.

Supernatural

With 15 seasons and a massive Tumblr fandom, Dean and Sam Winchester (played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, respectively) must fight every monster, wraith, poltergeist, trickster zombie and ghost with demons and angels hunting them. Soon, they are joined by the angel Castiel (Misha Collins) who proves to be more trouble (and adorable in terms of his feelings for the Winchester brothers). With a literal biblical apocalypse on its way, the Winchesters must fight their inner demons as they take on the mighty Lucifer.

Requiem

For the truly creepy, look to the Welsh. Requiem is a six-part series that follows a cellist, Matilda Gray (played by Lydia Wilson), as she discovers her true purpose when she visits a gloomy town after her mother's 'suicide'. What starts as a short trip to investigate her mother's death soon turns into a nightmare that includes missing children, erratic weather and satanic cults. Prepare to have your mind toyed with.

October Faction

Based on best-selling graphic novels of the same name, October Faction is the modern story of entities as old as witches and warlocks, with a few gory monsters thrown in. The amalgamation of a quippy script with centuries-old mythological beings, this one will be a fun watch for those who prefer light-hearted spooks.
