Ranchi: Adopting a new way to dupe people during the lockdown period, cyber criminals created a fake Facebook page of a prominent and closed city restaurant and offered attractive offers. Owner of Kaveri Restaurant, Kunwar Bhatia, filed a police complaint on Sunday soon after getting information about the crime.
Talking to TOI on Monday, Bhatia said he found the fake Facebook page, an exact copy of his official page, after several people called him and inquired about the discounts. On the page, the miscreants had listed a mobile phone number to call and offered three plates of food, comprising several delicacies, at Rs 150.
He said, “A person who received the calls from gullible customers asked them to book their order by filling up a form and to make payment through a link sent by him. I even suspect that the miscreants may be getting access to bank details of the victims for misuse.”
Bhatia added that the fake page was removed on Sunday itself after the miscreants were alerted.
Ranchi cyber cell in-charge Yashodhara said, “Since the miscreants have removed the page, police could not get its URL. We are trying to zero in on the culprits and may require inter-state cooperation in future to nab them.”
Bhatia said a restaurant in Punjab also faced a similar fraud recently and clarified that his restaurant never accepts advance payment for food delivery. “This message has been put up in our website for awareness of the general public,” he said, adding that Facebook, Inc., should also take note of such fake pages.
