A snake handler has shared footage of the moment a three-metre-long python lunged at him.

Stuart McKenzie from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers was called to a family home in Queensland after a huge carpet python was spotted in the backyard.

'Still to this day this is largest Carpet Python I have ever caught and probably the biggest seen on the Sunshine Coast in a long time,' Mr McKenzie said.

'It measured in at over 3.3 meters long and was one of the crankiest snakes I have encountered in a while.'

Mr McKenzie said the snake was old and 'wise' and had likely had a number of encounters with humans which caused it to be quiet aggressive.

He chose to share the video, which was taken a few years ago, showing the python lunging at the man and almost taking his camera.

Mr McKenzie starts to circle the reptile before it lunges angrily towards him, sending him back a few steps.

'Whoa! That was, that was close!' he said.

Because the clip is from a couple of years ago there is every likelihood the snake has grown even more in size since this encounter.

Mr McKenzie posted the video on May 6 and it has since been viewed over 40,000 times with man on social media quick to comment on the footage.

'Fast, even for an old fella,' one user wrote of the python.

'He was waiting for just the right time too. What a weapon!' another added.

'Wow that’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen,' a third wrote.
