Beauty salons to open for waxing, nails and eyelash extensions from Friday in Queensland – so what does this mean for other states?

  • Coronavirus lockdown restrictions will begin to gradually be eased this month
  • From Saturday, May 16 beauty salons in Queensland to reopen for many services
  • Other states have not yet released definite schedules for beauticians to reopen
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

From Saturday, Queenslanders will be allowed to go to beauty salons with the businesses to reopen with a maximum of 10 people in store.

This means those in the Sunshine State will be able to book appointments for hairdressing, waxing, manicures, eyelash extensions and facial treatments but those in other states will have to wait.

Lockdown restrictions are being lifted in stages across the country after the National Cabinet agreed on a three step outline on May 8.

However, it will be up to the states and territories to decide on schedules for when each step of the plan will be implemented.

NEW SOUTH WALES

In NSW, restrictions will begin to be eased on Friday May 15, however, beauty salons are not part of the first phase and the NSW government has not confirmed when they will implement further phases.

'Without a vaccine we need to be vigilant, especially when restrictions lift,' Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

'There will inevitably be more cases, so social distancing will become even more crucial.'

VICTORIA

Victoria has also said restrictions will remain in place for the retail and hospitality industry with no definite indication of when they would be eased.

From May 12, however, there will be more reasons that people will be allowed to leave their homes.

These include shopping for supplies that you need, care and caregiving, exercise and outdoor recreation, work and education, and visiting friends and family.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

In Western Australia, Premier Mark McGowan said beautician services can reopen under phase three of their plan which is expected to be in effect in just over a month.

'Phase three would be in approximately four weeks, [but] if things go very well we may well be able to do it sooner than that. But we would only act on health advice in doing so.' Mr McGowan said.

Phase two of the easing of restrictions will begin in the state from May 18 which will allow gatherings of up to 20 people and pubs and restaurants can open their doors for up to 20 customers.

QUEENSLAND

The Queensland government released its 'roadmap' for easing coronavirus restrictions on May 8 and is the first out of the gate to reopen the beauty salon industry.

Tattoo parlours, tanning services, massages, and spas, however, are subject to more stringent restrictions and will not be opening until the second phase of the outline to begin on June 12.

A 'COVIDsafe' checklist will also be required before the businesses can open their doors which has conditions to ensure hygiene and social distancing standards are maintained.

The federal government's three step plan, which is to be used as a guide for the states and territories on when to lift restrictions has a different focus for each step.

Step one gives Australians opportunities to return to work and social activities, including gatherings of up to 10 people, up to 5 visitors in the family houses and some local and regional travel.

Step two builds on this with gatherings of up to 20, and more businesses reopening, including gyms, beauty services and entertainment venues like galleries and cinemas.

Step three allows gatherings of up to 100 people. International travel and mass gatherings over 100 people will remain restricted.
