The ongoing nationwide lockdown in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus did not have much impact in many parts of Assam as hundreds took to the streets in violation of social distancing norms.

Defying all safety advisories and government orders, a large number of women on Tuesday gathered in front of a bank in Assam's Biswanath district to withdraw Rs 500 from their respective Jan Dhan accounts.

The women queued up in front of the bank to withdraw Rs 500 from their Jan Dhan accounts, several of them claimed. Some women were seen queuing up with their toddlers in their arms.

Security personnel were seen on the spot appealing to the women to follow social distancing norms but many of them did not pay heed to the advice.

While the government has appealed to the people to maintain social distancing and follow safety advisories, many seem to be risking their lives and that of their families by failing to adhere.

As of May 12, Assam has reported 64 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
