BENGALURU: Chaos reigned supreme at Ramamurthynagar and Vidyaranyapura on Sunday morning as massive crowds jostled to get free vegetables distributed by two BJP leaders. With absolutely no regard for socialdistancing norms, people rushed towards the podium to get their share.
A nod from police for distribution at BBMP ground in Ramamurthynagar was sought by the office of MLA Byrathi Basavaraj while a local leader had no such permission to conduct the event in Vidyaranyapura, a police officer told TOI. “The leader was denied permission by the jurisdictional police. He had approached senior officers, who had rejected his request,” he said.
On Sunday, majority of the staff from Vidyaranyapura and other police stations under north-east division were deployed at Kempegowda International Airport to receive stranded passengers from the UK and arrange quarantine facility for them.
“Gaining opportunity, the leader arrived at HMT grounds with his supporters. He had sent messages of distribution through WhatsApp. More than 1,500 people stormed into the ground and it was a complete mess,” an officer said. However, things were a little better at BBMP ground in Ramamurthynagar, as police drew boxes and deployed personnel to ensure social distancing.
However, as word went around that vegetables were limited and were being distributed on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, people rushed towards the podium. Around 2,000 people had gathered there.
“We tried to maintain social-distancing norms as much as possible and there was not much crowding. People were all seated, but as soon as I reached the spot and began distributing, they rushed to collect ration kits, because of which we truncated the event and I left the spot,” said Byrathi Basavaraj. Recently, people attacked each other in at least three instances during free distribution of milk in different parts of the city.
