Women supporters of JD(S) corporator Nazima Khanam stage a protest against police on SundayBENGALURU: Tension prevailed in Tipu Nagar near City Market on Sunday after several women hit the streets alleging police had manhandled the local corporator the previous night.
KR Market ward JD(S) corporator Nazima Khanam, who has been in 14-day home quarantine for having visited the house of a patient who had succumbed to Covid-19, was caught by police on Saturday night. Tipu Nagar has been sealed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
However, around 9.30pm she was caught moving in a SUV at the barricades. Chamarajpet police inspector Kumaraswamy seized the vehicle and took away the ID card she was carrying. Offended by it, her supporters staged a protest on Sunday morning without maintaining social distance, accusing police of manhandling her. They demanded local MLA Zameer Khan arrive at the spot and sort out the matter.
Police said the protest was plotted by Nazima. However, the corporator claimed that she did not ask her supporters to protest and they did not oblige to her requests to disperse. Nazima’s husband Ayub Khan alleged that plainclothesmen had stopped her the previous night and she did not know that they were cops on patrol.
DCP (west) Ramesh Banoth and Congress leader Altaf Khan came to the spot and convinced the public that it was a misunderstanding, and a meeting will be held with both the corporator and police. Eventually, the protesters returned to their houses.
Nazima did not respond to the calls and messages from TOI seeking her response.
