CHENNAI: A heap of fishing nets was destroyed in a fire at Thirumalai Nagar in Pulicat, near Chennai, in the early hours of Monday.
The cause of the fire was not known. Fisheries department officials said the worth of the gutted nets was yet to be ascertained.
They said the nets, belonging to a group of fishermen, consisted of both gill and kola fish nets.
The Pulicat police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the fisheries department.
Asked whether the nets were set on fire due to rivalry between two groups of fishermen, an official said fishermen live in total harmony in Pulicat.
The fisheries department has a provision to provide compensation to fishermen. Last year, the department gave compensations to a couple of fishermen after their nets were destroyed in similar incidents, said the official.
