KOLKATA: Following the footsteps of KMC and Howrah, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation plans to start conducting special community swab sampling and bulk testing among the residents who live in containment zones under the civic body’s jurisdiction in Salt Lake and Rajarhat. The tests may start from Monday.
The KMC is currently conducting community swab sampling and rapid testing in places, which are densely populated and predominantly slum areas such as Belgachhia, Narkeldaga, Garden Reach, Topsia and in some areas of Jorasanko and Burrabazar, which are densely populated.
In Howrah, the Howrah Municipal Corporation has already conducted the drive at Jogmaya bustee area under Bantra police station and in Sanatan Mistry Lane in Golabari.
This is the first time swab samples will be collected from containment zones of Salt Lake and Rajarhat, which are under the jurisdiction of Biddhannagar civic body. Presently, over 40 localities across 15 wards of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation are under containment zones.
“The plan is to collect the swab samples from households who are falling inside the containment zones. The healthworkers, who have been engaged for this job, have undergone training. We plan to start the community sampling work from Monday or Tuesday onwards,” said Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation MMIC (Health) Pranay Roy.
Officials from the civic body’s health department said they also plan to collect swab samples from households, where a family member is suffering from fever or Covid-like symptoms and from residents who stay around the residences of doctors, nurse and paramedics,” said a civic health department official.
“This will help detect asymptomatic carriers, who may have contracted the virus from the healthworkers and medical professionals, who may be asymptomatic,” said the official.
Officials said the civic health workers were already conducting door-to-door health surveys in several places across the township where they were trying to find out if anyone was suffering from flu or Covid-like symptoms. Thermal screening is also being done at market places.
