A man has been found dead in Melbourne's south-east after locals reported hearing a gunshot.

Police went to Calrossie Crescent in Endeavour Hills just before 8pm to treat an injured man but he was unresponsive and died at the scene.

Police are investigating reports a gunshot was heard near the incident.

Nine News is reporting a person is on the run following the suspected shooting.
