Twenty-eight people hailing from UP under treatment after they were injured in a collision the vehicle they we...Read MoreCHANDIGARH: Twenty six more trains would be leaving Punjab on Monday and Tuesday carrying migrant workers to their home states — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh.
Since Tuesday, total 50 trains had left Punjab till Sunday night, carrying approximately 1,200 passengers each. Around 11 lakh migrant workers have registered with the state government to return to their homes.
Senior IAS officer Vikas Pratap, state nodal officer for coordination with the Indian Railways, said, “The state government is going to increase the number of trains to 15 per day from mid-week to facilitate forlorn migrants to reach their homes from Punjab.” Till date, 60% of the trains from Punjab have left for Uttar Pradesh and 20% to Bihar. The Punjab government is paying around Rs 7.5 lakh per train to the railways and passengers are not being charged anything for the journey.
On Monday and Tuesday,13 trains each would now be leaving. These trains would start from Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala and Amritsar railway stations.
As many as five trains would leave from Ludhiana railway station on Monday and six trains on Tuesday for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Similarly, four trains would be moving out of Jalandhar railway station on the two days for Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Two trains would originate from Mohali railway station for Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh on Monday. One more train would leave for Bihar from Mohali railway station on Tuesday.
Migrant workers would also be able to board one train from Amritsar railway station for Uttar Pradesh on Monday, and one train each for Uttar Pradesh and Chhatisgarh on Tuesday. Similarly, one train would be carrying migrant workers from Patiala railway station to Bihar on Monday.
