Three killed as mound of earth collapses in Maharashtra's Kolhapur

KOLHAPUR: Three persons, including the owner of the well, died and two others were injured, after the mound of earth collapsed on them while they were repairing the old well at Kodoli village of Panhala taluka in Kolhapur district on Saturday night.
The incident happened when they were climbing up the stairs of well after finishing their work and suddenly the mud from heap near the well stared slipping. Two of them managed to survive but the three others got trapped under the heap of mud. Their bodies were recovered at around 2am by the district disaster management department with the help of earth remover machine and excavator. The injured have been admitted at a government hospital for treatment and are out of danger, said disaster management department officials.
The deceased have been identified as Mahesh Warkari, Sikandar Jamadar and Amol Sadkale, all residents of Kodoli, taluka Panhala.
The injured have been identified as Netaji Patole and Prakash Yashwant Khochikar.
The incident has been registered with Kodoli police station.
"The well located on Kodoli- Kakhe road in Kodoli village belongs to Warkari. He had started repair work of the well. On Saturday he went to the spot with his friend Sikander Jamadar and after checking the repair work when he was climbing up the mud from heap started falling on them. Before they could realise they were trapped under mud. Sadkale who was standing outside well near heap also fell in the well and was trapped," said a police officer attached with Kodoli police station.
"A rescue operation was launched immediately with the help of locals and we could remove the bodies of three persons by 2am," he said.
