AHMEDABAD: A day after the new rules for discharge by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Gujarat discharged record 454 patients in 24 hours. For the first time, the number of discharged patients was higher than the new positive cases for the state.
Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary (health & family welfare), said that the patients were found to be completely cured and fit for discharge. “With the discharges on Sunday, Gujarat’s recovery rate is 31% now which is higher than several other Indian states,” she said.
Out of the total discharged, 266 were from Ahmedabad alone, followed by 41 in Vadodara, 33 in Surat and 17 in Anand.
According to updated ICMR guideline, the asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients could be discharged after 10 days if they don't have symptoms such as fever without double negative RT-PCR tests.
Gujarat crossed 8,000 positive cases mark on Sunday with 8195 total cases and became second Indian state after Maharashtra to record the number. According to state health department figures, Gujarat added last 1,000 cases in three days.
In 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday, the state recorded 398 positive patients – second highest ever – that included 278 from Ahmedabad, 41 from Surat, 25 from Vadodara and 10 from Gandhinagar.
Ravi said that in 24 hours, Gujarat recorded 21 deaths of Covid-19 positive patients. “Out of the total, in eight cases Covid-19 infection was the primary cause of death. In other cases, the patients had co-morbidities,” she said. Ahmedabad topped the tally with 18 deaths whereas Anand, Bhavnagar and Surat recorded one death each.
With 3843 tests in 24 hours, the state recorded one of the lowest single-day tests in past one week where the highest was over 5400. Gujarat has so far conducted 1.13 lakh tests to find the positive cases.
With the new cases, 71% of total positive cases and 77% of the deaths of Gujarat are recorded from Ahmedabad alone. Ahmedabad also has 54% of total discharged patients.
