Karnataka: Hope for migrants seeking West Bengal travel

Migrants who left Bengaluru and Hyderabad gather on Mumbai-Kolkata Highway in Nagpur on Saturday
BENGALURU: South Western Railway, along with the state government, is likely to operate the first train to West Bengal to ferry migrant workers on Sunday.
The move came after the West Bengal government gave consent to operate trains to that state. West Bengal has proposed to operate trains from Bengaluru to Bankura, New Jalpaiguri and Purulia. Over 20,000 workers from West Bengal have registered on ‘Seva Sindhu’ portal to return to their native place.
Khursid Alam, a migrant worker who was stranded at Majestic on Saturday, said “They are operating trains to Bihar but they have not run any trains for us. Nobody has any information about the trains. I’m working in a garment factory in Peenya. We are struggling here with no food and money and want to somehow reach our native”.
SWR has fixed the fare to West Bengal at Rs 770, while migrant workers must pay Rs 140 to BMTC for bus fare. West Bengal has reportedly approved three trains from Karnataka. Sources say Karnataka also plans to operate trains to Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. “One train to Assam is also on the cards, but approval has not arrived yet,” an official said.
