MUMBAI: A cop performed the final rites of a stranger who died of a cardiac stroke. The family members of Pramod Khare (42), a bachelor, are settled in Delhi, Kolkata, Dubai and South Africa could not make it due to the lockdown. The funeral was live-streamed for them.
On Wednesday, neighbours found Khare, a real estate agent, unconscious in his flat and informed the police. He was declared dead at a public hospital. Constable Subhash Shinde (34) who had taken Khare to hospital tried to get contact numbers of his relatives from his phone when his brother called. “I gave him the bad news,” said Shinde.
As they could not make it to the funeral, he offered to perform the final rites. “I asked them for a consent letter,” said Shinde who also paid for the expenses.
As the cop lit the funeral pyre, Khare’s 69-year-old mother burst into tears.
