NEW DELHI: States across India reported over 3,000 new Covid-19 cases for the second day running as the country’s corona count raced past 56,000 on Thursday, taking just four days to reach that number after crossing 40,000 on May 3. Several cities reported a spurt in the number of cases. In Delhi, 2,000 cases have been reported in the last 7 days. Mumbai, along with Pune, contributed nearly 90% of Maharashtra's total cases.

Mumbai

  • In Lalbaug, Ganesh Utsav Mandal decides not to take monetary contributions from people in view of Covid-19
  • Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope expresses confidence that Mumbai will see a sharp decline in Covid-19 cases in the next 15 to 20 days. (PTI)
  • With nearly 2,000 containment zones in Mumbai, the BMC tied up with e-delivery companies to ensure residents of these zones get essentials delivered to their doorsteps.
  • Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, while addressing an all-party leaders’ meeting via video conference indicated that the lockdown may be extended till the end of May in the state’s red zones, especially the Mumbai and Pune metropolitan regions which have contributed 90% of Maharashtra’s cases so far.
  • Despite the state government allowing builders to recommence work, many workers at building sites in Mumbai and surrounding areas are desperate to leave for their hometowns.
  • The BMC will in the next few days add around 200 beds for Covid-positive pregnant women. Apart from BMC-run Nair Hospital near Mumbai Central, three other public hospitals will provide care for such women.

Kolkata

  • Private hospitals in Kolkata were asked by the health department on Thursday to enhance the number of Covid beds and increase the capacity of their existing units.
  • Another locality in Salt Lake — a stone’s throw from City Centre and close to the three liquor shops that have been attracting the largest crowd in the past four days — was sealed off on Thursday after a CD Block resident was hospitalized with Covid-l9 like symptoms.
  • On Wednesday, the imam of the Jamia Masjid Gausia, popularly known as Bangali Bazar Masjid, proposed to give the entire third floor of the mosque on Iron Gate Road for quarantine purpose.
  • A four-month-old with symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease has tested Covid-19 positive, something that has already been noticed in New York and several European countries.

Lucknow

  • With the economy taking a severe beating during the Covid-forced lockdown, UP government has passed an ordinance suspending a majority of labour laws in the state for three years.
  • Lucknow zoo animals are calmer, more active in lockdown
  • Machhli Mohal locality was sealed on Thursday after seven cases of novel coronavirus were reported from the neighbourhood on Wednesday, taking the number of hotspots in the city to 14.

Chandigarh

  • The Punjab government has decided to declare summer vacation in all government colleges and universities of the state from May 15 to June 15.
  • April grant: UT releases Rs 35 crore for Chandigarh civic body to pay salaries to staff
  • Heads and teachers of some government schools visited their schools on Thursday, a day before the distribution of the books is to begin, to make necessary arrangements for ensuring social distancing during the distribution. Books for Class VIII will be distributed first.

Chennai

  • Tamil Nadu government on Thursday increased the retirement age of its staff from 58 years to 59 years to defer an outgo of Rs 5,000 crore towards retirement benefits for the current fiscal. More than 25,000 government employees were set to superannuate this financial year.
  • After a six-week-long ‘dry period’, liquor outlets in Tamil Nadu, barring Chennai, opened on Thursday and thirsty men and women bought about 20 lakh litres worth Rs 170 crore.

Ahmedabad

  • A residential complex, Status Tower, near the TV tower in Thaltej, has found a unique way of keeping the virus away from their plates. They have installed eight ultraviolet (UV) lamps on all sides of a wooden box kept in the complex. The box is then used to sterilize all edible items entering the building, killing all pathogens in about 40 seconds.
  • Before the 48-hour deadline set by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for the private practitioners, a total of 228 clinics and hospitals in the city limits were issued notices.

  • In order to ensure that the Covid-affected people get hospitals and asymptomatic patients have sufficient quarantine facilities the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation took over eight private hospitals with a capacity of 800 beds and also 60 hotels with a capacity of 3,000 rooms.
  • The seven companies of paramilitary forces sent to Gujarat were deployed in the worst Covid-19 affected containment areas of Ahmedabad and Surat, to augment security measures.
  • Gujarat health department officials said that Ahmedabad recorded 23 out of 29 deaths recorded in 24 hours

Hyderabad

  • With new positive cases becoming a daily norm, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has tweaked the concept of containment clusters and decided to quarantine only the house or the apartment of the affected, instead of locking down the entire locality.
  • Lack of proper information about e-pass registrations and trains has left migrant workers running from pillar to post. With no local transport available, migrants are trudging towards the Secunderabad railway station to board trains, unaware that it was shut.
  • The municipal administration and urban development department have instructed residential welfare associations, gated communities, apartments owners and residents to refrain from allowing maids and domestic help till May 15.
  • Following a tremendous response to liquor sales on the first day, liquor shop owners lifted ₹140 crore worth stocks from 19 government depots.

Delhi

  • Three shocking videos allegedly showing cops using excessive force to enforce the lockdown have surfaced from across the city. One of the alleged victims is a 14-year-old boy, who subsequently died.
  • The chaos surrounding the sale of alcohol in the capital has forced the Delhi government to put in place a token system for consumers at city liquor stores.
  • Though the number of Covid-positive cases has risen sharply, no new containment zones were created in the city since April 30. In the past seven days, over 2,000 cases have been reported. While there were 3,515 cases till April 30, the numbers rose to 5,532 by May 6.

Bengaluru

  • Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has suspended intrastate bus services from Bengaluru from Friday.
  • Under criticism for cancelling Shramik Special trains for migrant workers from Bengaluru to their home states, the Karnataka government has decided to resume services from Friday.
  • Nearly 7,000 rooms in 80 Bengaluru hotels — 5-star, 3-star and budget — have been identified to quarantine Indians who are being flown back from foreign countries.
