The Union Health Ministry on Friday said the number of novel coronavirus cases will not peak in India if people continue to follow all the norms and regulations for the disease's prevention.
"If we follow all norms of social distancing and hygiene, India may not achieve a peak. Our curve will continue to be flat. The moment we don't follow precautions or required processes, the possibility of a spike in the number of cases becomes real," senior health ministry official Lav Aggarwal said.
Claiming that it was possible to avoid a peak altogether, Lav Agarwal sought community help to ensure that preventive measures are followed to a tee.
Talking about the government's strategy in case the number of coronavirus cases rises exponentially in India, Lav Agarwal said that the government will continue to focus district and containment zone-wise strategies.
"There are several studies which have predicted cases between thousands to lakhs, the wide variation between the predictions comes from a large number of unpredictable variables. Thus, it will be difficult to base our field action on the basis of these studies," he said.
"We must rely on the current growth rate or doubling rate of cases. We analyse the doubling rates of various districts or areas and decide of additional measures required to slow down the case growth," Lav Agarwal said.
Joint Secretary at the Union Health Ministry, Lav Aggarwal, claimed that at the current trend, India can manage the disease but there was no scope of failure.
"The current trends say that we can manage the disease, but it is is an everyday battle. Failure at even one single place will impact our overall effort. Thus, it is important to have a 100 per cent output of efforts in each and every place," he said.
Commenting on the quicker doubling rate in India, Lav Agarwal said that the country will have to bring behavioural change and learn to live with the virus.
