Coles has lifted item limits on tinned tomatoes and pasta as panic buying eases off.

This announcement comes after the coronavirus pandemic led customers to panic buy essential items and left the shelves of many stores empty.

On Tuesday, Coles also lifted restrictions off toilet paper and paper towels.

'We are pleased to be able to remove purchase limits at Coles on key household staples like toilet paper and paper towel, and expect to remove further limits as customer demand continues to stabilise and more categories see supply levels return to normal,' a Coles spokesman told The Herald Sun.

'We are grateful for the efforts of our suppliers to deliver significantly increased volumes to meet the recent unexpected surge in customer demand and to our customers for their patience.'

Two items per person limits are still in place for flour, dry rice, eggs, frozen vegetables, frozen desserts, liquid soap and antibacterial wipes.

Coles will be expanding trading hours for everyone from Friday, including opening almost 200 stores earlier at 6am.

Chief Operations Officer Matt Swindells said Coles Community Hour had been very popular with eligible customers, but now they want to provide the service to everyone.

'The reason we started Coles Community Hour was because excess demand led to limited availability, which meant we had lots of people eager to get into stores early in the morning,' Mr Swindells said in a statement.

'With supply almost back to normal for essential groceries, Coles is reopening this hour to all customers again as well as opening earlier where we can, to make shopping more convenient for everyone in the community.'

Mr Swindell said Coles' number one priority remains the health and safety of customers and their team members.

'As the government begins to look at easing restrictions, customers should remember that appropriate safety practices will still apply and ask all customers to support with the same amazing collaboration we've seen in the past few weeks.'
