Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces Rs 1 crore ex-gratia for policeman who died of COVID-19

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condoled the death of a Delhi Police constable and stated that his family would be provided with an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore

While the coronavirus outbreak continues to ravage the entire country, healthcare workers, along with police staff, are nobly fulfilling their responsibilities to serve and protect.

The novel coronavirus claimed its first victim in Delhi police after 31-year-old constable Amit Kumar succumbed to death in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

On Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condoled the death of a Delhi Police constable and stated that his family would be provided with an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore. The constable is survived by his wife and a three-year-old son.

Arvind Kejriwal on his Twitter handle wrote, “Amit ji did not care for his life and kept serving us Delhi people. He got infected with corona and passed away. I pay homage to his sacrifice on behalf of all Delhi people. An ex-gratia of Rs one crore will be given to his family.”

Delhi government has already announced an ex-gratia of Rs one crore in case of death of any of its personnel who are on duty to battle the coronavirus.

On the other side, Gautam Gambhir said he would take care of the constable’s son as his own. The former cricketer and BJP MP from East Delhi has his own foundation that will take care of complete education of the child.

Gambhir tweeted, “The administration failed him. The system failed him. Delhi failed him. We can’t bring Constable Amit back, but I assure that I will look after his child like my own. GGF will take care of his complete education.”

COVID-19 IS SPREADING AMONG INDIAN POLICE

 India has been under lockdown from March 25 and till date over 50,000 coronavirus cases have been reported with nearly 1,700 have succumbed to death. Maharashtra, which is the worst-hit state in India, has now reported 531 police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19. Also, 37 cops from Delhi were found positive.

In recent days, hundreds of police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19. According to reports, 30 lakh police staff in the country are trying to ensure the safety of India’s 130 crore people and advising them to stay at home.
