Today's headlines:
1. Overnight, new US data showed that a record 20.236 million workers lost their jobs in April. But Wall Street ended higher, and the rand also firmed to R18.55/$ after a strong 3.5% increase in Chinese exports. Economists were expecting another decline.
2. South Africa is planning to build a new 2,500 megawatt nuclear power plant, Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said yesterday. Read more.
3. South Africa's annual house price growth fell to 1.9% in April – the weakest increase since 2009, according to the latest FNB Property Barometer released on Thursday. Read more.
4. And business confidence plunged to an all-time low in April, according to the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry's index. Read more.
5. The deadline for SAA workers to accept voluntary termination has been extended again. In the labour court, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) challenged the voluntary retrenchment process initiated by the business rescue practitioners in March, wanting it declared unlawful or, alternatively, unfair.
