10 more fire tenders, including 2 foam tenders, are currently present at the spot
A day after styrene gas leaked killed 11 people in RR Venkatapuram area of Gopalapatnam in Visakhapatnam, latest reports said that gas fumes started leaking again from the tanker on Thursday.
"Gas fumes leaking again from the tanker where there was Styrene leakage today. Around 50 fire staffers, with National Disaster Response Force's (NDRF) support, are carrying out the operation. We've ordered the evacuation of villages in 2-3 km radius for safe side precautions," said Sandeep Anand, Visakhapatnam District Fire Officer.
The gas, identified as styrene, is also called vinylbenzene, and is used in the manufacture of polystyrene plastics, fibreglass, rubber, and latex.
He further said that 10 more fire tenders, including 2 foam tenders, are currently present at the spot and ambulances are ready for any emergency.
On Thursday, a leak of chemical vapour from LG Polymers on the outskirts of the coastal city killed 11 people. Over 350 people who inhaled the toxic substance had to be hospitalised.
