MUMBAI: A day after BMC allowed one electronic store or a hardware store on a road to open for business in Mumbai, very few dared to do so. And some of those who did were told to down shutters by police.
"Treating Mumbai like a village will not help revive the economy," said Viren Shah, president, Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association criticising BMC's decision. There are at least 3,000 electronic stores on Lamington Road at Grant Road and over 1,000 hardware stores in Lohar chawl near Crawford Market. "All these stores are next to each other. Whom will the BMC allow to open?" he asked.
Mumbai city Guardian minister Aslam Shaikh said the decision to allow these stores to open was taken following complaints of breakdown of ACs, fans and mixers.
