COIMBATORE: Forest department officials on Wednesday arrested a youth for trying to poach deer near Pedhakuttai Pirivu, located within the Sirumugai forest range in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The youth, who had no previous charges, was slapped with a fine of Rs 5,000.
Sirumugai forest range official Senthil identified the accused as K Muthusamy, 20. “The poacher was spotted near a snare that was set up to trap deer in the forest area. Many deer get trapped in these snares. Some of them die,” he said.
The snares are usually made of coiled barbed wire that is pulled apart and spread out over an area. When deer walk past the area, they get caught in these snares.
Another forest department official said there was an increase in youngsters indulging in poaching. “They wander in the forest to while away time or for fun. When they enter the forest area, they try to poach animals,” the official said.
Forest personnel were constantly on the lookout for snares and remove them, he added.
