- OnePlus is readying a 65W fast charging system.
- The 65W system could debut on the OnePlus 8T series in late 2020.
- You can expect sub-1 hour charging time with this charging system.
It was OnePlus that pushed for fast charging system in conventional smartphones back with the OnePlus 3 and since then it is consistently improving it. Though others have joined in the fray. Oppo, which has close working relations with OnePlus, eventually got the hang of it and so far has managed to offer charging speeds up to 65W, filling up average 4000mAh batteries in less than 30 minutes. OnePlus, however, has stuck to a more modest 30W system with its latest phones but that may change with the next OnePlus flagship release.
A recent finding from MySmartPrice suggests that OnePlus has been pushing to get the 65W fast charging technology on its phones and that may happen as soon as late 2020. A new 65W fast charger has just gone through a safety certification at the TUV Rheinland in Japan and carries the OnePlus trademark. That means the technology is ready for use and OnePlus may announce with its next flagship release, which is expected to be the OnePlus 8T series for late 2020.
The jump to 65W fast charging from the existing 30W system could offer huge speed boosts in charging. As an example, the OnePlus 8 Pro with its 4510mAh battery could be charged in under 30 minutes. This makes it much quicker than the 1 hour charging time with the 30W system. For the OnePlus 8, the charging time could be even lesser.
Now, it is known that OnePlus sources most of its technologies from Oppo and the 65W charging system is no exception. Last year, Oppo debuted its 65W charging system with the Oppo Reno Ace and later trickled it down to the Ace 2. In India, Realme, which is a subsidiary of Oppo, often uses the company's new technologies. The Realme X50 Pro 5G launched in early 2020 gets the same 65W charging system.
This also gives us an overview of what upgrades this year's OnePlus 8T may offer. Rumours have it that there is no Snapdragon 865 Plus this year and hence, OnePlus will rely on internal upgrades for its phones. The 65W fast charging seems like a big upgrade for both the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8T Pro.
Before that happens, OnePlus is expected to announce the OnePlus Z, OnePlus' first attempt after a while to go back to the affordable segment since the OnePlus X. The OnePlus Z is expected to be a cut-price OnePlus 7T. Instead of using a Snapdragon 800 series chip, this one is expected rely on Snapdragon 765G chip.
