The day Pitso asked Hunt for a job

2020-05-07 11:48

Pitso Mosimane's coaching career could have been wildly different had he joined Gavin Hunt at Hellenic; the Bidvest Wits boss has revealed.

Both coaches have enjoyed stellar success in South Africa, with numerous league titles, at two of the biggest clubs in the country.

While Hunt made his way from Seven Stars to Hellenic, Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport and now Wits, his counterpart spent six years with Bafana; first as an assistant and then head coach, before joining Mamelodi Sundowns - having started out at SuperSport United.

The 55-year-old was winding down his playing days in Greece and Qatar after leaving the PSL and approached Hunt on his return about an assistant job with the Greek Gods.

As quoted by KickOff, Hunt recalled the story: "Do you know that Pitso once asked me for a job? Do you know the story? When I was coach at Hellenic (1998-2001), he wanted to become the assistant coach to me.

"When he came back from Greece - true story. I was the Hellenic coach, and he came and asked for a job but there was no space.

"We had somebody, and I said to the owners, who were Greek obviously, and Pitso came back from Greece, talking Greek you know, and I said it's no problem with me but it's you guys that have to pay him, not me. So, they decided... yeah, it's amazing how things work.

"And then he got a job at Sundowns with the juniors, coached the juniors and then obviously he went to SuperSport (United) as an assistant and then got the main job, so that's how it works."

Both coaches have four PSL titles, alongside a host of cup trophy honours.
