FALL RIVER -- A 22-year-old man was killed late Wednesday morning in a shooting on Mott Street, and a homicide investigation is underway, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's office.

The victim was identified by the district attorney's office Wednesday night as Jake Williams, 22, of Fall River.

First responders found Williams at the scene of the shooting and took him to St. Anne's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Bristol County District Attorney spokesman Gregg Milliote said in a press release.

There was no information as of Wednesday evening about a possible suspect.

"The investigation is extremely active at this time," Milliote said.

Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza, appointed to the job by Mayor Paul Coogan just Monday, said the shooting was "an isolated incident" and deferred the release of any other information about the investigation to the district attorney's office.

The district attorney's office, state police investigators and the Fall River Police Department are investigating.

A witness told The Herald News at the scene that he was sitting in his truck parked on Warren Street when he heard three shots and witnessed a car drive by with what appeared to be a flat tire and then heard two more gun shots.

One person was seen being taken into custody by police near Tecumseh Street.

State and local police were still on the scene Wednesday afternoon and had blocked off a large swath of Mott Street. A state police investigator was seen measuring the location where the shooting occurred at the intersection with Warren Street. Down the street, about one block away, a white car with damage was located in the middle of the street.

Cardoza said officers on Thursday will be in the neighborhood in what is called a post-crime impact group.

"Those officers will be assigned to the Mott Street and Warren Street area to put the peoples' concerns at ease," Cardoza said. "What they'll also do is canvas for any additional witnesses to the incident."

Mayor Paul Coogan, a retired educator, lamented the loss of the victim.

"Another young person loses their life for no reason. We don't need this in Fall River and hopefully who is involved will be brought to justice."
