  • The Rewards app will remove the need for paper receipts or rewards card
  • Woolworths says it has no immediate plans to phase out paper receipts entirely

Woolworths is ramping up its efforts to promote contactless shopping through the launch of a new mobile phone app.

The Rewards app will remove the need for shoppers to use a physical card to access member's savings and allow them to store receipts digitally, without the need for a physical receipt.

While the app will reduce the quantity of receipts being printed, a Woolworths spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia they have no immediate plans to phase out receipts entirely.

The new Rewards app is being released on Friday May 8 and can be used across other retailers owned by the Woolworths Group including BWS and Big W.

Customers can use the app to view their point balances, bonus point officers, find special deals and locate nearby Woolworths fuel outlets.

Woolworths Director of Rewards, Hannah Ross said the changes will make shopping even easier.

'A growing number of our members want to transact without paper receipts or plastic cards, and we're pleased the app will support both,' she said.

'We'll closely monitor member feedback on the app and look to bring even more exciting features to members in the months ahead.'

The supermarket giant has been rolling out a series of new measures for staff and customer hygiene since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Measures incluced the introduction of hand sanitiser stations at store entries, protective screens at checkouts, social distancing measures in-store and customer limits.

Woolworths has been trailing behind Coles in the war on profits during the coronavirus pandemic.

The supermarket giant reported a 10.3 per cent growth in food sales for the 13 weeks to April 5, compared to Coles' 13.1 per cent rise in sales.
